Global Nomads

Not every content provider is appropriate for every curriculum. However, if we think creatively about the content, sometimes we can find interesting ways to adapt it to meet our needs.

Please comment on the following:

1. Do you see any immediate applications to your own curriculum with this content provider? Please explain.

2. If not, could you do a similar video conference, but adapt it to better fit your curriculum? Please explain.

At this time I do not other than teaching students what they can do personally. I work with special needs student who are now eligible for SSI insurance because 2/3 of the students parents are laid off.

I would like to take part in a video where the students could actually see the difference of the impact of this crisis across the state.

I could see where this might have an impact on high school students - I understood what some of the teachers mentioned about the elementary students.

this session would have been more effective if we would have been able to view students discussing this issue internationally

Students would need much background in order to be successful in this exercise - fewer groups would be ehlpful -allows for greater interaction.

I need to explore the Global Nomads site more to see what they have to offer. I think having the students interact with students around the world would be very valuable.

Not a huge fan, don't think I could use this in my classroom, but it was a different experience which was worthwhile. I got kind of bored after a while with all of the questions going to each site, and would have liked to see more real-world application of this program in schools.

As a primary teacher, I do not see any immediate applications to my curriculum. Maybe with further consideration, I may find a use.

I would have to find a way to make this accessible to elementary students. It appears to me that this is directed to HS. I think it would be easier at the elementary level would be to introduce students to other individual students and begin a dialogue before videoconferencing.

I'm currently teaching a lesson on how the economy effects students' life. It would be great if my students get to see the Global Nomads website.

I would also like if my students get to see how the economy effects other people around the world.

Not for me but this would have a place in the HS and I will make time to connect with those teachers to let them know about the wonderful opportunities GNG offers.

I would have liked to see this in action with students and perhaps an international interaction. I would have found this more useful in adapting this actual program in action.

Great way for students to learn about difficult concepts and to better understand how a bad economy effects one area harder than another.

I have facilitated a similar format between our SS teacher and one in NJ. I was there and thought the interaction between the two sets of students was great. However, our SS teachers says it takes too much time and will not continue....sigh...

I was personally inspired by this presentation. What an excellent way to communicate with other cultures and mindsets.

As an elementary teacher there are probably no immediate applications, however perhaps it could be possible to connect children from different areas of the world to discuss the effects of global happenings on them. This could open up many potential thinking/writing/debating activities!

I think that if the content was targeted to a younger population that my schools could use this program or something like it. It has a lot of possiblilites and it would be exciting to have students from other countries exposed to each other!

Very powerful! I am excited to share this information with our social studies department and health department, especially the Health and Well Being Conference on April 24.

The Global Nomads Group is new to me. This is an exciting prospect for young people to reach out and learn about others. Especially in rural areas, young people can find it difficult to reach beyond thier own situiations. In light of the economic difficulties that we spoke of today, this can be even more of a challange. The GNG is a wonderfully exciting opportunity to connect young people from around the world.

I think it is always helpful for our students to see other cultures and other kids from around the world and see how they live and how changes in the economy effect them.

I can see where we could use Global Nomads to expand our students' experiences, but the topic of the global economy was not one that I felt was applicable to my grade level. Even though it impacts all of us, it is not one that I can approach with my class. I look forward to exploring other possible topics.

I would like to use this for the automotive arena. My students are always asking about how the automotive industry will be impacted and how it impacts our economy. My students are worried more about their immediate area regarding repair facilities. We're finding out that more people are keeping their car longer, thus getting them repaired more often. We are doing an entire life skills lesson regarding this topic.
I'd like more training on the operation on video conferencing.

Global Nomads work on understanding, expanding global information and education with ourselves and students, and assisting students and ourselves holds great potential. Particularly in the area of teaching tolerance.
The DL application has the potential to draw students in.

This would be great. I know our Economics teacher would be interested in some of the topics. However, I'm not sure if funding would be available. :(

I am amazed by this group. I am so happy they were brought to my attention. What a great way to get your kids to start thinking globally. As an educator one of my goals is for students to understand that their is a world bigger then their town.

Thinking about my English class. Possibly doing a reaction to the same novel or short story on a current or relevant event. The classes could discuss the "why" "how" "what". It would be interesting to see different cultures responses to lets say The House on Mango Street or Night...

Looking at the GNG VideoArchives, they had some interesting programs for the science classroom. It's not just history/politics.

At this time, I do not see how I can incorportate this into my teaching. Possibly with further research I may be able to.

This would require some real modification to bring it down to a primary level. However with lots of planning it could be connected to our social studies unit on continents, maps, countries, and our world, etc. It would be great for kids to share what's happening in their part of the world... Share their perceptions, etc.
