Poetry Slam

Poetry Slam is a competitive event in which student poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience. Typically, the host selects the judges, who are instructed to give numerical scores based on the poets' content and performance.

Though poetry is usually considered something you learn about in English class, hopefully you will be able to find creative ways to adapt this idea to suit your own area of expertise.

Using the booklet "Planning Kid2Kid Videoconference Projects," think of ways to promote positive forms of competition by video conference. List and briefly explain your idea(s) in your comments.

Connections Abroad

When connecting around the state, country, or the world, there are many things to consider. That is why you should give yourself plenty of time to research and develop a collaborative connection. The best video conferences are those that are well-planned. Make sure to ask for advice from those who know video conferencing.

Paley Center

It is extremely important that our students become media literate - able to critically analyze the media they see around them all day, every day. The Paley Center is all about Media Literacy and presents it in a format with which kids are already familiar, using TV shows, commercials, news programs, etc.

Please comment on the following:

1. How would you apply this session to your own classroom?

2. If you really do not see how this session fits, are there ways to apply any of Paley Center's other VLEs to what your students are learning?

3. Why are pre- and post-conference activities so important?
